By Christian Hunt – Jewell is losing a professor beloved by both students and faculty alike, as Dr. Gregg Whittaker will be retiring from Jewell after the spring semester. As a leader in the Department of Business and Leadership, Dr. Whittaker has taught courses in economics and finance as well as innovation and entrepreneurship.
When asked to reflect about his time here at Jewell, Dr. Whittaker had nothing but good things to say about the college. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure at Jewell and have too many great memories to count. It is truly a remarkable institution with amazing students. It has been my honor to be a part of the Jewell faculty for these past 19 years and I will forever be thankful for the students I have met and friends I have made.”
Dr. Whittaker achieved many things here at Jewell but one of his favorites was being named “Best Dressed Teacher” by one of the sororities. You could always catch Dr. Whittaker sporting around his Yankee hat and collared tee. “Those who know me will appreciate the irony”, Whittaker said about the award.
Dr. Whittaker was once on Wall Street and when asked about making the transition from the boardroom to the classroom, he named two special individuals. “Gerry Williams (former Chair of the Business Department) and Walt Rychlewski (former colleague) were outstanding teachers and terrific mentors. And certainly Professor Michael Cook, who was here when I started and will continue to contribute to Jewell long after I am gone, has been important to me and my transition.”
As Dr. Whittaker leaves Jewell, he plans to stay in the KC area and focus on managing his private equity company as well as looking to launch a financial risk advisory service. While Dr. Whittaker will be missed at Jewell, the entire Jewell community wishes him the very in the coming years. Thank you Dr. Whittaker!
