Coach Larry Holley’s 900th Win

Coach Larry Holley

By Christian Hunt – This Jewell basketball season is one to remember. Not just because of the success both basketball teams had as they both made their conference tournaments respectively, but for something we do not see too often.

Head Men’s Coach Larry Holley joined a special club this season as he achieved his 900th win as a head coach. Coach Holley joins the short list of names that include, but aren’t limited too, Bob Knight, Jim Boeheim, Mike Krzyzewsky, Harry Statham, Danny Miles, and Dave Holmquist. When asked about the accomplishment and what he holds more dear, his first collegiate win or his 900th, he said it’s got to be the 900th. He stated that “At the time it was win #1 against Park University, November 25, 1969 – my first year as the head coach at Central Methodist College (now University) but the answer now is #900 because of the number of student-athletes and assistant coaches who were involved in those 900 wins.”

While being a part of a championship run is always on coach Holley’s mind, it’s not what he coaches for. Coach Holley looks to not only have his players win on the court but off it as well. “My goals have always included getting our players and teams to be the best they can be (both on and off the court).  To help them reach their potential.  I have often said that my success or failure will be based on what the young people I have coached do with their lives.  Are they good sons, brothers, husbands and fathers?  Are they living productive lives?”

Coach Holley has always been a man of winning, on and off the court. While win #900 is still fresh on everyone’s mind, coach Holley is looking forward and will look to continue to succeed as he always has, on the court and in peoples lives.

Congratulations coach Holley!
