Self described Optimist, Simon Sinek, states that “Leadership requires two things: a vision of the world that does not yet exist and the ability to communicate it.” This spring as I watched the 2016 graduates walk across the stage into the world beyond Jewell this quote seemed especially poignant. As we train future leaders we need to foster their imagination of a world that is not yet but ever so close. We need to allow them to vision, dream, realize and grow. But even if all that is achieved they need to be able to share that with others, inspire others and communicate a clear vision of what is around the bend. Optimism is much more effective when it is shared by others. We are excited about the class of 2016 and what they will do. We believe they are optimistic about the future, the impact they can have on the business world and their abilities to share that vision with others. Congratulations to the graduates! We are thankful for this legacy of leadership they leave to the students that follow them.
Please take a moment to look through the articles in this issue of Jewell Business Today. From all of us in the Department of Business and Leadership, here is wishing our students, alumni and friends a happy, safe and productive summer.
Sincerely, Dr. Kelli Schutte, Chair of the Department of Business and Leadership
