By Katherine Long – Each year, William Jewell’s faculty, students, and alumni get together to honor the achievements of our alumni during Achievement Day celebrations. This year’s event brought back some especially successful and engaging individuals. The four honorees for 2012 are Patricia (Garrett) Campbell ’68, Independent National Sales Director, Mary Kay Cosmetics, The Honorable Zel Fischer ’85, Judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri, Dr. Ed Leonard ’79, President, Bethany College, and Dr. Steven Stites ’82, Professor and Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine.
The festivities began with the Achievement Forum Dinner on Wednesday, February 29th. This event recognized current student leaders and gave the students a chance to know the honorees more intimately during a formal dinner and forum. The honorees shared stories from their days at Jewell and from their experiences since, renewing passion for our alma mater. Everyone in the room could feel the connection between our successful alumni and the attending students, full of potential. Motivational advice from the honorees included turning failures into successes and the value of being humble. Students were reminded what makes our education so unique, that we “learn how to learn,” which will prepare us well for the unknown future.
The following evening, William Jewell alumni, faculty and supporters from the Kansas City area honored the four distinguished alumni at a dinner in their honor at the Westin Crown Center Hotel. The event also served as a fundraising opportunity for need-based student scholarships. Doris Kearns Goodwin was the keynote speaker. Ms. Goodwin is an acclaimed historian, New York Times bestselling author, and Pulitzer Prize winner. She spoke on her book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, a biography illuminating Lincoln’s mastery of men and how it shaped one of the most significant presidencies in the Nation’s history.
Members of the Advanced Seminar in Business class had the opportunity to meet with Patricia Campbell, one of the 2012 honored alumni, in a roundtable discussion. She offered valuable insight on motivating people, preparing for an unknown job, and developing business relationships.
On the morning of Friday, March 2, the Achievement Day Convocation in Gano Chapel concluded the week’s celebrations. The four honorees were presented citations for their achievements, and several students and affiliation groups who have achieved success during their time at William Jewell were also recognized. This event united the Jewell community, reminding those present of successes already achieved and of those that await us. Coincidentally, two of the honorees quoted this verse in referencing Jewell’s valued-centered education: He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. – Micah 6:8
