By Luke Longfield – Throughout the summer there were many William Jewell students who held prestigious internships.  One of those students was Scott Buffa.  Scott is a senior Economics Major and Business Administration Minor at Jewell.  Scott held an internship this summer at LSA Portfolio Analytics, a dynamic and fast-growing firm located in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. LSA provides investment research, analytics, model portfolios, and practice management tools via a robust web-based delivery system to hundreds of independent investment advisors who specialize in mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs), insurance, and annuity products. Subscribing to LSA allows independent advisors to focus more on their clients while outsourcing much of the behind the scenes work.

During his internship, which began in June, Scott had the opportunity to work side by side with LSA CFO Brad Kasper. Scott learned and assisted with the process of screening top mutual funds in various asset classes and building objective-based portfolios using Modern Portfolio Theory and related allocation practices. Using another variety of analytic tools, he also learned to assess the risk of each portfolio based on simulated occurrences in the U.S. and global economies.

LSA LogoAccording to Scott, this internship has provided the opportunity to learn about a field of interest to him while also allowing him to develop deeper insight into his strengths and aspirations.  He discovered he was comfortable working with a computer for long periods without being bored or unproductive. He developed a command of financial terminology and financial software. And he was able to be a part of a small growing company and see how it operated.

Scott landed the LSA internship with the help of Jewell Career Services as well as through connections developed by business faculty. Students interested in internships are encouraged to discuss their interests with Career Services, academic advisors and their professors.
